Metal wouldn't be metal without rock as much as it wouldn't be metal without classical music; blues; or any other influence. Metal is a product of diverse influences so you can't say one of them is more important than the other ( at least not a lot more ). And people who say Metal is Rock but faster and louder don't know what they're talking about. I don't compare the two genres much. In my opinion they're different styles for different people, specially if you're a musician.
