Poles Go To Unusual Lengths To Generate Interest In iPhone

While mobs of salivating tech-starved nerds are pretty commonplace in the US (and dare we say it, the UK) around the time of a big release, it seems the Poles have more important things to do with their time. Demand for the new iPhone appears to be rather less than expected over there so stores are resorting to some pretty desperate measures to try and stir things up. Orange is apparently paying dozens of actors to stand in 'queues' outside to try and encourage more people to line-up and buy an iPhone. Of course nightclubs and fancy bars have been doing this for years, but it's rather depressing to think that any suggestion that people aren't willing to step over their own grandmother to buy Apple's latest upgrade has led to such drastic measures. Still, it's a testament to our stupidity as a species that we'll instinctively stop and investigate (and in theory, join in) if we see crowds of people gathering for an event we know nothing about. Perhaps this is a hang-up from watching a scrap in a schoolyard and those always just turn out to be a lot of pushing and shoving. The move sits in stark comparison to the US, where around one million iPhones were sold around the launch weekend. The lull in Poland seems to down to expensive monthly charges, so instead of wasting money on actors perhaps the stores should be coming up with some better deals. - Paul Lester [Reuters] iPhone orange apple

The diamond encrusted iPhone 3G will make you drool

Diamond_iPhone_3g.JPG
The iPhone 3G is already treated like a bar of gold or something akin by a substantial amount of its users. But what if it really was worth thousands and thousands of pounds? You'd never want it to leave the house through fear of irreparable damage (unless you had a disposable income).

iPhone 3G Antenna Tested: Works Fine

There have been reports in the media in recent weeks that the iPhone 3G has been, well, 'less 3G' than some owners would have liked. From reports of poor coverage and reception to dropped calls, some iPhone owners have been venting their fury on forums all over the Wibbly Wobbly Web. It's taken some serious Swedes, however, to look into the matter with a little more professional detachment. Their verdict: no problems. Scientists at a company called Bluetest, which sells test chamber facilities for wireless devices, tested a iPhone 3G to see if the antenna is, in fact, dodgy as hell. The outcome: "The values are completely normal." The phone was placed in a noise-free metal chamber where it communicated with a simulated base station, and measurements were taken about how the iPhone sent and received signals under different conditions. Compared to the Sony Ericsson P1 and a Nokia N73, the iPhone did fine. OK, the P1 was a little better at receiving and the N73 at sending, but only by tiny margins. So, if it's not the 3G antenna making iPhone 3G users irate, what is it?-Martin Lynch [Goteborgs-Posten] iphone apple

Is This The New iPod nano?

Back on Rumour St. this morning and we have what looks to be one of the more credible leaks on what the new iPod nano may look like. It comes from Kevin Rose [Digg founder], who has gotten things right and, really wrong, in the past, but who is sure - thanks to 'sources' - that the squarer and chunkier nano is going to be replaced by the end of next month with a slimmer and longer nano, complete with cool tapered edges. That's his pic above. The iPod touch is also due for some work, although mainly cosmetic on the outside but it will come with the 2.1 firmware software, that will then wing its way to the iPhone. Apple is also rumoured to be taking the knife to the price tags, with some 'fairly large' cuts on the way to offset any iPod sales hurt by the the [US] £100 iPhone. And, to top it all off, Kev says a new iTunes 8.0 with lots of new features is coming and that next Apple OS X 10.5.6 will come with Blu-ray support. Imagine, all of this is expected in the next few weeks so here's hoping, but not holding our breath. For all the details, watch Kev's video below.-Martin Lynch ipod apple music
