If there was any doubt as to how important broadband is to our day to day lives, a recent survey from Plusnet should put that to bed. According to the results of its poll, 92% of the UK cites their broadband connection as something they'd be unprepared to give up despite the financial doom and gloom that's affecting the country.Only 3% of over 15 million subscribers are choosing to economise by giving it up, and 30% say they'd rather ditch magazine subscriptions, cigarettes and alcohol (steady now) in favour of staying online. It's an interesting set of statistics when you consider exactly how many amenities the internet will help you do without, and not a great sign for a flagging magazine industry that has seen many of its previously loyal readers and subscribers choosing to find their information online. Still, it's good to see that people don't want to live their day to day lives without sites like Gizmodo to provide a daily fix of tech-news, so we'll sit up here in our ivory tower feeling all smug like until the tax war has ended. - Paul Lester [Pocket Lint] broadband internet poll

If you've got any Doctor Who fans in da house they might be more inclined to clean up their nerdy collection of sci-fi costumes and memorabilia if you buy something like this Tardis wardrobe. Unfortunately it's no bigger on the inside than it is on the outside, unless of course you're creative enough to mount it in a doorway to a bedroom and slice off one of the sides. It's actually classed as a 'Zipperobe', which seems to be a stupid name for a wardrobe that zips up rather than opening in the usual way, and is fashioned from hard-wearing, wipe-clean canvas. There's a single rail on the inside for hanging up clothes and measuring 187x84x84cm there should be enough room in here for quite a bit of clutter. It comes flat-packed for easy delivery and is available today from Amazon for a quite reasonable £29.99, if you're into that sort of thing. - Paul Lester [Amazon] doctor who sci-fi furniture

Oh dear. Sony has had to recall its big new firmware update for the PS3 following reports that it's managed to bring a certain number of them crunching to a halt. The new 2.40 firmware patch was set to bring cool in-game access to the XMB (Cross media Bar) and trophy support but it seems all it's delivered for some unlucky PS3 owners is a dead console. There's forum talk that refers to the patch interfering with the PS3's boot-up procedure. Here's what Sony has said:"As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We've received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up." How have you fared with the 2.40 patch? Is your PS3 behaving correctly or has it gone the way of the Dodo?-Martin Lynch [Sony PlayStation Blog] console ps3 games

Since we all know that time is money, I have no idea why this watch from Thinkgeek is called the Free Time Watch. What the hell is free about time? And that £45 price tag isn't exactly screaming 'Free' either. As watches go, the Free Time Watch is at least a little different with separate rotating rings indicating hours, minutes and seconds. The little white marks are meant to represent something like our planets orbiting the sun at different rotational speeds. According to the company:So, like the planets tracing their various orbits around the Sun, the rings on this watch each move with different rotational speeds to indicate the time. The three concentric circles rotate clockwise with each gap in the circle communicating the precise time. The hour, minute and seconds are defined by the outer, middle and inner rings respectively. I guess it's not the worst looking watch but with the James Bond phone watch doing the rounds and now, the uber-geeky Deus Ex Machine watch, there are more hi-tech timing gadgets to waste your hard earned cash on.-Martin Lynch [Thinkgeek] news technology gadgets watch

Following the sudden defeat of HD DVD, Toshiba revealed last month that it will attempting to kick Blu-ray's butt - again - by placing a special chip in its new DVD players that will upscale DVD video into HD video to rival that of Blu-ray. This month we get a new logo [above] and speculation that Toshiba will be adding Internet capability to the new DVD players - and DVD movie disc content - too. The "DVD Download/DL" logo has been approved by the DVD Forum Steering Committee but we have no real information on what it will actually do. Will it make a difference in the never-ending HD spat? The chip going into the new DVD players is rumoured to be based on the SpursEngine 1000 processor - which has proved incredibly capable indeed in early HD processing tests. The SpursEngine is a co-processor with 4 cores, operating at up to 1.5GHz, and designed for intensive workloads like encoding and decoding HD video.-Martin Lynch [TG Daily] blu-ray HD DVD movies
