Nick Hornby on why eBook readers are not the new iPods

amazon_kindle_nick_hornby.jpg
Ask the average geek what he or she thinks of eBook readers and most of them will reply with a snort of derision and a roll of the eyes. At the last Le Web 3 in Paris, Scoble asked Philippe Starck what he thought of the design of the Kindle and much fun was had at its expense. And now Nick Hornby's got in on the eBook bashing act, writing a guest post for thh Penguin blog about why the eBook has a long way to go before it's even close to replacing books. What's interesting about his column is that although he points out the obvious failings of eBook readers that we've all managed to spot, he also makes some very obvious - and until now overlooked - points about just why the eBook is not likely to take off any time soon.

National Storytelling Week: curl up with a bookworm’s gadgets

holidayBooks.png On the surface of it readers - who employ probably the most consistently unchanging technology to enjoy themselves - and gadget addicts don't mix. Except that many of us are both. Aside from the controversial e-book reader, there are plenty of other ways to involve gadgets, the Internet and other shiny tech into reading and telling your favourite tales. Here are five tech-meets-bookworm suggestions, partly in honour of National Storytelling Week, which kicks into gear tomorrow.

Polymer Vision Readius gets a release date. Sort of. Somewhere. At some price.

readium_3.jpg If you were following the twin force of reporting power that is Shiny Shiny and Tech Digest at last year's 3GSM, then get ready because it's just around the corner again, albeit it with a More Serious Name. One of the products that we did get a peak at in 2007, the Polymer Vision Readius, finally looks to be seeing the light of day this summer.

Macworld Expo 2008: Female bloggers can Blog with (even more) Moxie

blogging%20with%20moxie.jpgWiley is releasing a clutch of stuff at Macworld, but it was this not-particularly-Apple-related book release that caught my eye, for obvious reasons. Blog designers Joelle Reeder and Kathy Scoleri have put together their tips for female bloggers in a book called The IT Girl's Guide to Blogging with Moxie, presumably in reference to their chutzpah-channelling Moxie Design Studio. Although the book was first published in October 2007, it's the first I've heard for it. Both authors are members of BlogHer, and have been featured speakers at South by Southwest.
