Sanyo Adds Cool ‘Slo-Mo’ To Latest HD Camcorder

sanyo slo mo HD camcorder.jpg Sanyo’s latest Xacti HD camcorder is just what you’ll need to capture those embarrassing family moments in glorious slow motion. You know, trousered Uncle Morris moon-walking on the wedding tables before toppling spectacularly off the edge and onto the wedding cake.

The compact and light, Xacti HD1010 - sticking to the same overall design as current Xacti models - offers 1920 x 1080 video capture but can also capture slow-motion video at 300 frames per second (fps) and present it back with ultra-smooth 60fps playback so that the embarrassment can be dragged on endlessly. It’s also a handy feature for capturing exciting sporting moments.

The camcorder sports Face Detection and something called 'Face Chaser' technology which can be used to recognise up to 12 faces at a time when shooting photos and video. That way, Uncle Morris’ amazed/shocked expression as he goes over will be as clear as day.

The camera can take 4MP photos, has a 10x optical zoom, image stabilisation for those morning after shakes and, there’s a 7fps sequential shooting mode for fast action/sports photography. The HD 1010, which features a 2.7in LCD, weighs just 9.9oz and uses SD and SDHC cards for storage. An 8GB card will hold up to 87 minutes of Full HD video.

The camcorder goes on sale in the US first for $799. You can probably just replace that $-sign with a £-sign for the UK price when it arrives this summer.-Martin Lynch

The $1 Million Superbike

So you think you have a cool bicycle do you? Well, you probably do but I bet it didn’t cost $1 million (£500,000).

Still, if you really want that Olympic Gold Medal in the sprinting pursuits then you really have to ditch that Raleigh and get yourself something very special indeed.

Dutch cyclist Theo Bos narrowly missed out on a gold at the last Olympics so this time the cycling specialists Koga Miyata have poured $1 million and three years into creating a one-off superbike that will provide him with those precious few milliseconds.

This is the Koga Kimera and, unlike my old Chopper, it weighs hardly anything, can get up to 75kph and, according to the makers, can’t really be ridden by us normal folk thanks to the super-stiff frame, one gear setting and complete lack of brakes.

What no brakes? C’mon $1 million and no bloody brakes? What about a Dynamo light? Reflectors? Watch the Reuters video above to see Bos testing it out.-Martin Lynch

MSI Wind Mini-Laptop Gets Thumbs Up

msi wind.jpg

Back in April, MSI and Intel hooked up in Shanghai to show off a working prototype of the MSI Wind, a tiny notebook along the lines of the Asus Eee 901 and other mobile internet devices (MIDs). Now, it‘s here.

Like other new arrivals from the likes of Asus, Acer and Dell - the MSI is colourful, small and light, weighing in at 1Kg. It is powered by an Intel Atom processor and runs a choice of Windows XP Home for £250 or SUSE Linux for £150. It sports a larger screen than its rivals at 10in with a resolution of 1024 x 600, has 1GB of expandable RAM and an 80GB HDD – there is no SSD option, which is a bit of a shame.

There’s a 4-in-1 card reader supporting SD, MMC, MS and MS Pro, 3 USB 2.0 slots, Ethernet, in-built Bluetooth and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, 1.3MP webcam and internal speakers. The 3-cell L-ion battery can be upgraded to a 6-cell version, which is good for 5.5 hours.

It looks like a contender in the MID space and, according to Laptop Magazine which has just given it 4.5/5, it’s a little cracker. Available in black, white and pink, it ships first in the US with the XP Edition on June 16.-Martin Lynch

I’ve Been Driving In My – Inflatable – Car?

inflatable car.jpg
Yes, it's true. There’s a company working on selling you an inflatable car. Not for your kids party either but a fully working car that you can build yourself – with a friend – in about 2 hours.

XP Vehicles will ship the car, made from different non-metal materials like polymer fibre and NASA-grade inflatable material, in two boxes for you to assemble. The car is electric using a variety of different battery/fuel cell technologies and, because it will be so light, it boasts a potential range of 300 miles on a single charge. There’s also some ‘hot-swap’ battery technology that will extend your range to a whopping 2,500 miles. Check out the pimping options from this FAQ on the site:

Q. What options will be available?
A. ipod mounts & connects, 20 colors, trim, decals, roof, no roof, car covers, solar mounts, stereos, integrated pumps, home connections, GPS, battery clubs, alarms... all the good stuff you get with a “regular” car.

Q. What’s all this about driving them off cliffs and floating them in floods and Tsunami’s? Are they really super cars?
A. The nature of the polymer construction, on those that use it, offers secondary advantages which are not part of the intended use but which could possibly provide additional safety in such circumstances.

OK, right up to the whole ‘Useful-In-A-Clifftop-Plunge-Or-Imminent-Tsunami’ benefits, I had some hope of seeing this make it into development sometime. Now, I’ll just have to keep my eyes peeled for another blow-up car.-Martin Lynch

Acer Aspire One: A Pretty Eee Challenger

acer aspire one.jpg
The mobile internet device (MID) segment has become very crowded in recent weeks and Acer is the latest heavyweight to announce a product to topple the popular Asus Eee.

Dell revealed its scarlet contender recently – but with no real details – while Sony looks to be prepping a Vaio MID. I’ll have more on the MSI Wind later today.

The Aspire One is certainly pretty and with an estimated price tag of £200, it’s well positioned in the pricing war. It’s powered by the Intel Atom processor and sports an 8.9in display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels – like the new Eee 901. The Aspire One weighs in at less than 1Kg and measures 9.8 x 6.7 x 1.14ins. It comes with a choice of Linpus Linux Lite or Windows XP Home installed and 512MB or 1GB of RAM.

Unlike the Eee it will also come with a choice of storage methods, offering an 8GB SSD or an 80GB hard disk drive. There’s also a 5-in-1 card that supports MMC, SD Card, xD Picture Card, MemoryStick and MemoryStick PRO. It boasts 802.11b/g WiFi built-in and future models will come with 3G too. There’s a webcam for live video chatting and additional software includes OpenOffice 2.3, one Mail, Messenger, Acer eRecovery Management, Acer Launch Manager, Adobe Reader, McAfee Internet Security Suite and Microsoft Office Trial 2007.

The Aspire One will ship in blue and white to start, followed later by ‘Golden Brown and Coral Pink’. No UK dates - or pricing - yet but it's shipping in the US from Q3 for just $380.-Martin Lynch
